What Independence Day Means to Me

Every year, the Fourth of July offers an opportunity to pause, reflect, and celebrate.

For many, it is a day filled with family gatherings, cookouts, fireworks, and traditions that bring generations together. While those moments are certainly worth celebrating, Independence Day also reminds me to reflect on the freedoms that make innovation, education, and opportunity possible.

As a scientist, entrepreneur, inventor, and mother, I never take those freedoms for granted.

The freedom to ask questions.

The freedom to pursue new ideas.

The freedom to challenge existing thinking in the pursuit of better solutions.

Scientific progress begins with curiosity, but it flourishes in an environment where ideas can be explored, tested, and shared openly. Throughout history, some of the greatest discoveries have come from individuals who were willing to think differently and remain committed to improving the lives of others.

That spirit of innovation continues to inspire my work every day.

Independence Day also reminds me of the importance of community.

No meaningful achievement happens alone. Behind every discovery, every business, and every mission is a team of dedicated people working together toward a common goal. I am grateful for the researchers, healthcare professionals, educators, partners, colleagues, friends, and family members who continue to support our shared mission of making a positive difference.

I also think about the responsibility that comes with opportunity.

Freedom allows us to dream, but it also calls us to serve others with integrity, compassion, and purpose. Whether that means mentoring the next generation, supporting our communities, advancing scientific research, or simply extending kindness to those around us, each of us has the ability to create meaningful impact.

As we celebrate this Independence Day, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on what freedom means in your own life.

What opportunities has it given you?

How are you using your talents to make a difference?

How can you help create a healthier, stronger, and more compassionate future for those who will come after us?

For me, the answers always come back to one mission. Continue learning. Continue serving. Continue asking questions. Continue working to improve the lives of people, pets, and our planet.

I hope you and your loved ones enjoyed a safe and meaningful Fourth of July. Thank you for being part of this journey, and thank you for allowing me to share my passion for science, innovation, and purpose with you.

Together, we can continue building a future defined by hope, discovery, and service.
